ENIGMA
MILLA & MILLI
The Enigma collection is a sculptural range that appears to have been carved from a block of stone. It is an enigmatic collection, where only the few lines carved into the solid wood hint at its use and function. Nevertheless, this is a fully functional collection that explores the potential of solid wood furniture!
The original inspiration comes from classical, historical blocks of stone that have been rounded and smoothed by time, weathered by the passing of time. It is also a visual metaphor for what a company like Milla & Milli stands for.
A company that produces its own wooden boards from locally sourced oak trees and selects the best pieces to make its own furniture. So, the collection is also very much about the idea of mass and solid wood.
Overall, the Enigma collection is defined by its monolithic appearance and its extra-large rounded edges. However, each piece of furniture within the collection is defined by its dimensions and proportions, as well as the graphic lines that appear to be carved into the wood, subtly revealing its functionality. These lines suggest openings: doors and drawers. They give each piece its rhythm, soul and heartbeat.
Despite this collection being all about mass, the focus is also very much on detailing and precision. All the pieces rest on a small base, creating the impression that they are floating or levitating above the ground. The doors have hidden push mechanisms so unless people know the pieces their opening remains enigmatic. Inside, lighting components have been integrated in an almost invisible manner to remain true to the pieces.
The Enigma collection plays with the materiality of the wood. Its specific design language allows it to take on myriad different typologies and functionalities. Although it is a fully functional collection, it questions the idea of functionality in a furniture piece, appearing more like a sculpture than anything else. The collection embodies what I call 'Minimal Radical' pieces!
